A Grill-Free Memorial Day Picnic

From Big Girls, Small Kitchen

Earlier this week, we proposed a great coffee and beer-marinated steak to kick off your Memorial Day grilling - and it seems many of you will be trying it out! But for those who don't have a Weber handy this weekend, we bring you all the ingredients you need for a grill-free picnic, courtesy of Big Girls, Small Kitchen.

Cara Eisenpress and Phoebe Lapine are the two twentysomething girls bravely experimenting in their respective - and small - New York City kitchens. But these self-proclaimed "Quarter-Life Cooks" don't let size or meager budgets interfere with their cooking endeavors, churning out everything from easy weeknight meals to more thought-out, impressive dinner menus, learning and sharing their great tips along the way.

Their just-released first book, In the Small Kitchen: 100 Recipes From Our Year of Cooking in the Real World, is out on shelves now - and it's perfect for that fresh graduate or really, any novice home cook in your life!

If you moved into your apartment in the fall, you may have forgotten all about the importance of outdoor space. All winter, you were holed up in your cozy little crib. And then Memorial Day hits, and you realize you are one of those sorry Americans without a deck, roof, or terrace and, more importantly, without a grill. But don’t despair: there are many fun ways to celebrate the beginning of summer without putting a nice brown crosshatch on your steaks. If you don’t have private outdoor space, there are plenty of public alternatives to track down. We’ve put together a great Memorial Day picnic menu where all you need is a patch of green, a corkscrew, and a blanket covered in friends.
