Diet Tips for the New Year Every year around December 30 or 31, we make a resolution to start the new year off right. In the new year, I’ll drink less. In the new year, I’ll donate to charity more often. In the new year, I’ll call my parents and grandparents every day. While these examples are common enough, the most common is without a doubt, the following:

In the new year, I’ll go on a diet.

You’ve said it, I’ve said it, we’ve all said it! This is the year that my diet will start, and usually the year starts off with great success. Salads every other day, lots of fresh fruits and vegetables; maybe this dieting stuff isn’t so hard after all! But as they always do, good things eventually come to an end, and we find ourselves pushing aside the bowl of brown rice for that lovely plate of chili cheese fries. The diet is a difficult road to travel down, but it isn’t impossible. Rather than limiting yourself to what you think you should and should not be eating, perhaps it’s better to take a different approach.

  • All good advice. For the first time after many attempts over the years, last year I lost the pounds. It really does require a different attitude to food, in particular for me why I felt the need to binge eat on the weekend after a week of sobriety,

    Portion control is the #1 thing - it took me many months of studiously weighing and measuring *everything* I ate for me to get to where I can gauge how much is OK and how much is too much (though of course I'm still off at times). Find out what's good (fruit, veggies, yoghurt, f.ex) and what's bad (basically, oil/fat), although you do want *some* fat to give you that 'full' feeling.

    Another major learning point for me was to eat 'a bit' at meal time, then wait - it can take 20-30 minutes before you start to feel full but you will. It's a behavior I'm still trying to learn but it's crucial - stop eating *before* you feel full. And yes, grazing is good - I eat more often now but smaller amounts, and I'm never 'starving' anymore; hungry yes, but managably so.

    Don't think of dieting as punishment, think of it as a change in how you view food and nutrition. Take up the challenge of eating well and healthily. Get interested in food and cooking yourself.

    Thanks @matterbury! I completely agree...dieting should never be seen as a punishment, just a way to treat your body right!
