Restaurants for Wine Lovers in Las Vegas

If you're a wine lover in Sin City, these are the places for you

For those traveling to Las Vegas, there are hundreds of restaurants to choose from. Celebrity chefs are opening up restaurants left and right, restaurants from around the country are opening up Vegas outposts, and high-end restaurants are not want for customers. There are countless restaurants with excellent wine lists, only a few suggestions of where to go are listed here.

    Picasso

Sitting on top of the Bellagio with views of the famous fountains is Picasso, a French restaurant whose walls are filled with paintings by Pablo Picasso. Chef Julian Serrano creates a seasonal French menu with Spanish accents, while Master Sommelier Robert Smith maintains a list of over 1,500 wines to complement the menu. In 2011, on top of consistently winning two Michelin stars, Picasso was nominated for a James Beard Award for Outstanding Wine Service. Prices are steep, with a pre-theatre menu, a vegetarian menu, a prix fixe and a degustation menu. Only the pre-theatre menu is priced below $100 (its $75 for three courses).

    Weds – Mon 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.

    Closed Tuesdays
    3600 Las Vegas Blvd S
    Las Vegas, NV 89109
    Phone: (702) 693-8105

    Jasmine

Jasmine, also located in the Bellagio, is a world away from Picasso. With high-end Chinese cuisine, the menu is the exact opposite of many of the steakhouses and French restaurants that dot the Strip. Not your hometown Chinese take-away joint, Jasmine has a tasting menu, a pre-theatre, as well as an a la carte menu. Dishes include a two-course Peking Duck Entrée, Singapore-Style Dungeness Crab, Lobster, Kobe Beef Short Ribs and the traditional menu mainstays like General Tso’s Chicken and Lo Mein.

    Daily 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
    3600 Las Vegas Blvd S
    Las Vegas, NV 89109
    Phone: (702) 693-8166

    Lotus of Siam

Lotus of Siam, located off the Strip in a nondescript strip mall, is a breath of fresh air in Sin City. At first sight of this low-key establishment, one might not expect a wine-focused restaurant, but with a large list focusing on German Rieslings, the wines complement the excellently prepared Thai food. For non-Riesling fanatics, the wine list has a sizable amount of other wines as well. The restaurant has received glowing reviews from Gourmet and Wine Spectator, as well as multiple James Beard Award nominations. In 2011, Saipin Chutima, executive chef, tied for the James Beard Award Best Chef-Southwest with Tyson Cole of Uchi in Austin, Texas. Priced modestly, Lotus of Siam is a gem for wine lovers looking to get away from all the fussiness and pomp of the Strip.

    Lunch: Daily 11:30 a.m. - 2 p.m.
    Dinner: Mon - Thurs 5:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m.
    Fri – Sun 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
    953 E. Sahara Ave, Suite A5
    Phone: (702) 735-3033

    Alizé

Situated atop the Palms Resort and Casino on the 56th floor, French restaurant Alizé has what could possibly be the best view in Las Vegas. It has an even better wine list. Helmed by Claudio Vigani, the list boasts thousands of bottles, including multiple bottles from famed Burgundy estate Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, California cult wines like Harlan, and first-growth Bordeaux. Chef André Rochat creates highly rated French cuisine, earning an acclaimed Michelin Star and four diamonds from AAA. As an added bonus, Rochat is a Cognac lover. Both Alizé and sister restaurant André at the Monte Carlo have an extensive, 9-page long cognac list featuring some cognacs and Armagnacs that are more than 200-years-old.

    Dinner: Sun - Thurs 5:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
    Fri - Sat 5:30 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.
    4321 West Flamingo Road
    Las Vegas, NV 89103
    Phone: (702) 951-7000

    CarneVino

Part of the Mario Batali-Joe Bastianich restaurant empire, CarneVino is the James Beard Award-winning duo’s first Italian-style steakhouse. Located inside the Palazzo, the restaurant is one of three Batali-Bastianich restaurants in Las Vegas. With multiple menus including a $120, multiple-course Beef Tasting Menu and an a la carte menu with Veal Chops, Lamb, Dry-Aged Rib Eye and many house-made pasta dishes, CarneVino has an Italian-centric wine list that will please the non-Francophile wine lovers staying in Vegas. Weighing heavily towards Piedmont reds, for those who love Big Barolos with their meat, CarneVino seems the place to go. OTTO Pizzeria, another restaurant in the family, is a much more casual pizzeria, featuring an exclusively Italian wine list.

Dinner: Nightly 5 – 11 pm. Taverna open at noon.
    3325 Las Vegas Boulevard South
    Las Vegas, NV 89109
    Phone: (7012) 789-4141

    Ferraro's Las Vegas

Located off the Strip on Paradise Road, Ferraro's has been run by Gino Ferraro and family for over 25 years. Son Mimmo took over running the kitchen in 2003, but father Gino still runs the front-end, including maintaining the 900-plus selection wine list. Handmade pastas, pizzas and traditional dishes like Osso Bucco, all paired with a highly diversified, Italian-focused list, make this experience different than those on the Strip. Open early for happy hour, for dinner, and late for a Reverse Happy Hour, the restaurant also has a 5-course prix-fixe with wine pairings for $125.

    Lunch: Mon - Fri 11:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
    Dinner: Daily 4:00 p.m. - 11:00 p.m.
    Happy Hour: Daily 4:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
    Reverse Happy Hour: Daily 11:00 p.m.- 2:00 a.m.
    4480 Paradise Road
    Las Vegas, Nevada 89169
    Phone: (702) 364-5300

A solid list. I would like to heartily recommend Lotus of Siam as well -- the absolute best German Riesling wine list in America, and perfect to complement the spicy Thai food. My review can be accessed here:

      Some other Las Vegas thoughts:
About a decade ago, three dozen of the Wine Spectator's chat room participants would head out to Las Vegas for a wine-swilling weekend. We would hit up Lotus of Siam for a lunch, go to Rosemary's (now sadly closed) for dinner, and have a smashing Bacchanal the next night at the Pinot Brasserie at the Venetian. The food was very good, and the best part was that corkage was FREE! People brought their best bottles (aged First Growths and Burgundies, California Cult wines, aged Ports), and the party carried on into the wee hours. The Sommelier staff loved it as well -- they pretty much camped out in our separate dining area. We did this four years running -- great memories.

omg, i'm about to leave for las vegas at the end of the week! this could not be more timely. thank you. Hey, you all don't like Aureole? I know the whole "wine angels" thing is a little gimmicky, but whatever the quality of the list, it's a fun experience, and I actually thought the food there was outstanding, personally.

Aureole -- Ate there a lo-o-ong time ago with a winery owner friend and his lady. We got some deference from the Sommelier, but the food service was very slow. And they didn't let some in the party order a la carte, while others ordered the set menu. We were there 4 hours to complete the meal. But that was then -- things may be different now.
