Wine for a Luau

What to pair with your next luau!

Wine for a Luau I remember carefully making my way through the wine selection at Longs Drugs (or was it Safeway?) back in the day. Wine in Hawaii used to be a tricky thing, though the truth of the matter was that whether it was Longs or Safeway, they had a halfway decent selection in the late 1980s! Yup, Domaine La Roquète Chateauneuf du Pape, David Bruce Petite Sirah and BV Georges de Latour were all occasional gems that graced my table, surprising as that may seem.

Surprising because Lahaina Maui wasn't exactly a wine geek hot spot back then, but also surprising because it's not like these are the perfect wines for a balmy night dining on mixed plate. I love Hawaii to this day, though I don't get back there enough (like that's actually possible). When I do go back, I love to indulge in all my local favorites: kale ribs, poke and of course Kalua pig.

So what do I drink with these dishes today? Well, let's take a look at some of the classic recipes Hana Choi has featured in her latest article on Whatscook.in: How to: Luau!
