Sweet-and-Sour Meatballs

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 1 ½ cups onion
  • 2 28-ounce cans Italian-style tomatoes
  • ½ cup golden brown sugar
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 4 large garlic cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ground pepper
  • + 5 more ingredients
    • 1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 14 1/2 ounce can beef broth
    • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
    • 1 cup fresh breadcrumbs

Pour tomatoes with their juices into heavy large Dutch oven. Using potato masher, crush tomatoes. Add broth, 1/2 cup onion, brown sugar, half of garlic and 1 tablespoon lemon juice. Bring to boil.
