1948 Original Barbecue Sauce

Ingredients

  • ½ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ cup chopped celery
  • 2 teaspoons hot sauce
  • 1 (8-ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 2 fresh celery leaves, chopped
  • 3 tablespoons molasses
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • + 10 more ingredients
    • 2 teaspoons dry mustard
    • 1 (14 1/2-ounce) can whole tomatoes
    • 1/3 cup vinegar
    • 2 lemon slices
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • 1 bay leaf
    • ½ teaspoon ground allspice
    • ¼ cup chopped green pepper
    • 1 medium onion, chopped
    • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted

Sauté onion and garlic in butter until tender. Stir in remaining ingredients; simmer, uncovered, 30 minutes. Remove from heat, and press mixture through a food mill, if desired. Use to baste chicken when grilling.
