Sausage Potato Casserole

- 1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese
- 3 cups thinly sliced peeled potatoes
- ¼ teaspoon pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ¼ cup chopped onion
- ¾ cup milk
- 1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup, undiluted
