Anniversary Chocolate Cake

Ingredients

  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup butter
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 4 - ounce package sweet baking chocolate, chopped
  • ½ cup water
  • + 15 more ingredients
    • 2 cups granulated sugar
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla
    • 1 cup buttermilk or sour milk (see note)

    • Chocolate Curls (recipe follows), optional
    • 1 ½ cups heavy cream
    • 6 1 - ounce squares bittersweet chocolate
    • 6 1 - ounce squares semisweet chocolate
    • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla
    • 2 pounds powdered sugar (about 8 cups)
    • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
    • 1 cup softened butter
    • 2/3 cup boiling water
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla

Separate eggs. Allow egg whites, egg yolks, and butter to stand at room temperature for 30 minutes. Meanwhile, grease and flour three 8x1-1/2-inch or 9x1-1/2-inch round cake pans and two 6x1-1/2-inch cake pans; set pans aside.
