Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 cup yellow cornmeal
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 3 tablespoons salad oil
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup (1/8 lb.) butter
  • 1 pound sweet apples, such as Fuji, rinsed, peeled, cored, and sliced lengthwise
  • + 4 more ingredients
    • 1 large egg
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • 2/3 cup brown sugar
    • 1 cup all-purpose flour

1. Melt butter in a 10- to 12-inch frying pan over medium heat; stir in brown sugar until dissolved and bubbly. Stir in apples and cook until they are barely tender when pierced, about 5 minutes.
