Ingredients
- 3 cups whole milk
- ¼ cup cornstarch
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup sugar
- 3 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened; preferably 64% cacao)
- ½ tablespoon sugar
- 2 large eggs

Bring sugar and water to a boil in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderately high heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved.
