Ingredients

  • 3 cups whole milk
  • ¼ cup cornstarch
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 ounces fine-quality bittersweet chocolate (not unsweetened; preferably 64% cacao)
  • ½ tablespoon sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • + 4 more ingredients
    • unsweetened cocoa powder
    • ½ cup heavy cream
    • 3 tablespoons Tia Maria or other coffee-flavored liqueur
    • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla

Bring sugar and water to a boil in a 3-quart heavy saucepan over moderately high heat, stirring until sugar is dissolved.
