Ingredients

• ½ cup butter or margarine, softened
• 3 (2 1/2-ounce) packages blanched almonds, chopped
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger
• 1 (10-ounce) package currants
• ¼ teaspoon pepper
• 1 tablespoon brandy
• 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • 1 (15-ounce) package raisins
  • 1 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoons ground allspice
  • ¼ cup plus 2 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder

Combine 2 cups flour and baking powder in a medium mixing bowl. Cut in butter with a pastry blender until mixture resembles coarse meal.
