Buttermilk Waffles with Cherry-Almond Sauce

  • 1 cup cherry preserves
  • ½ teaspoon almond extract
  • 9 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 cups buttermilk
  • Lightly sweetened whipped cream or plain yogurt
  • 3 tablespoons sugar
  • + 3 more ingredients
    • 1 12-ounce bag frozen pitted dark sweet cherries
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • ½ teaspoon (scant) salt

Combine frozen cherries and preserves in medium saucepan. Bring to boil over medium-high heat, stirring until cherries begin to thaw and juices form.
