  • 2 tablespoons 2% reduced-fat milk
  • ¼ cup sugar
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • Cooking spray with flour (such as Baker's Joy)
  • 1 cup nonfat buttermilk
  • ½ teaspoon salt

    • 12 ounces cake flour (about 3 cups)
    • 2 large eggs
    • ½ cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 ¾ cups sugar
    • 1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
    • 6 tablespoons canola oil
