Cappuccino Chocolate Layer Cake with Mocha Frosting

Ingredients

  • Cake:
  • 1 ¾ c all-purpose flour
  • ¾ t baking powder
  • ¾ t baking soda
  • ¼ t salt
  • 1 T instant espresso powder
  • 1 t vanilla extract

    • 1 1/3 c buttermilk
    • 2/3 c unsalted butter, slightly softened
    • 1 2/3 c granulated sugar
    • 2 eggs
    • 3 (1-ounce) squares unsweetened chocolate, melted
    • Frosting:
    • 1 ½ t instant espresso powder
    • 1 t vanilla extract
    • 3 T milk, divided
    • ½ c unsalted butter, slightly softened
    • 3 c powdered sugar
    • 2 (1-ounce) squares unsweetned chocolate, melted
    • 2 T chopped dark chocolate, optional
