  • 2 ¼ cups hot water
  • 2 ¼ cups buttermilk

    • 4 ½ teaspoons baking soda
    • 4 ½ cups sugar
    • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    • 2 ¼ cups unsweetened cocoa powder, plus more for dusting
    • Unsalted butter, for pans
