Chocolate Nut Upside-Down Cake

Ingredients

  • ¾ cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. pure vanilla extract
  • 2-½ oz. (5 Tbs.) unsalted butter
  • ¼ tsp. table salt
  • 5 oz. (10 Tbs.) unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 6 oz. (1-1/3 cups) all-purpose flour
  • + 7 more ingredients
    • ¼ tsp. baking soda
    • 3 Tbs. water
    • 3 large eggs
    • ½ cup buttermilk
    • ¾ tsp. baking powder
    • 1-½ oz. (½ cup) unsweetened natural cocoa powder
    • 1-¼ cups toasted assorted unsalted nuts (see note above)

Heat the oven to 350°F and lightly butter the sides of a 9x2-inch round cake pan.
