Cinnamon-Sugar Coffee Cake

Ingredients

  • Pinch of ground allspice (optional)
  • Pinch of salt
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 cup confectioners' sugar, sifted, plus extra, as needed
  • Cinnamon-Sugar Glaze

    • Cinnamon-Sugar Glaze (recipe follows)
    • 3 egg yolks
    • 3 eggs
    • 2 tablespoons candied ginger, minced
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • For the Cake
    • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
    • ½ teaspoon, plus ¼ teaspoon ground ginger
    • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1 ½ sticks unsalted butter, very cold
    • 2 ¼ cups superfine sugar
    • 1/3 cup sliced almonds or chopped walnuts
    • 1 tablespoon heavy cream
    • ¼ cup fresh lemon juice
    • 1 cup milk
    • ¼ teaspoon baking soda
    • 2 ½ cups unbleached all-purpose flour
    • ¼ cup dark brown sugar, packed
    • ½ cup walnuts, chopped
    • For the Topping

1 For the glaze: Combine all of the ingredients in a medium bowl and stir with a whisk or fork until smooth.
