Ingredients

    • 1 ½ tablespoons light corn syrup
    • 1/8 teaspoon pure almond extract
    • 3 large egg whites
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 20 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 ¾ cups sugar
    • 3 9- by 2-inch round cake pans
    • 2 ¼ cups sugar
