Ingredients

  • Confectioners sugar
  • 4 ½ ounces unsulfured dried apples
  • 5 tablespoons water
  • 2 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 2 ½ tablespoons light brown sugar

    • 2 cups unfiltered apple cider
    • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 ½ cups water
    • 1 deep-fat thermometer
    • 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening (preferably trans-fat-free)
    • 2 quarts vegetable oil
