  • 3 pounds tart, crisp apples (such as crispin or pink lady), peeled, quartered, cored, thinly sliced
  • 18 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • A 9'-diameter glass or cermanic pie dish or metal pie pan
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 ½ teaspoons kosher salt
  • Vanilla ice cream (optional)
