  • 10 ounces fine-quality semisweet chocolate
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla
  • 1 large egg
  • ¾ teaspoon baking powder
  • 4 ounces coarsely chopped pecans
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • 9 tablespoons unsweetened Dutch-process cocoa powder

    • 1 ½ cups sugar
    • 3 (9-inch) round cake pans
    • ¾ teaspoon vanilla
    • 14-oz can sweetened condensed milk
    • 20 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
    • ¾ cup whole milk
    • 1/8 teaspoon almond extract
    • 7 ounces sweetened flaked coconut
    • ¾ teaspoon salt
    • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
    • ¾ cup water
