    • Cooking spray
    • 6 garlic cloves, minced
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 8 cups sliced red onion (about 1 1/2 pounds)
    • 1 tablespoon olive oil
    • ¼ cup balsamic vinegar
    • ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
    • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
    • 8 (1 1/2-ounce) slices sourdough bread
    • ½ teaspoon cracked black pepper
    • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
    • 1 (2-pound) top round steak, trimmed (about 1 1/2 inches thick)
    • 2 tablespoons minced peeled fresh ginger
    • 2 tablespoons butter, melted
