  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 6 slices country bread, cut into 1/2-inch cubes (about 6 cups)
  • 2 teaspoons ground cardamom
  • 4 tablespoons salted butter
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 2 large mangoes, pitted, peeled, and cut into 1/2-inch cubes, or two 10-ounce bags frozen mangoes, thawed

    • Whipped Cream or vanilla ice cream for serving
    • 1/3 cup sugar
    • 3 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
