Mother's Depression Cake

Ingredients

• ¼ teaspoon(s) salt
• 2 teaspoon(s) Baking Soda
• Optional
• 2 cup(s) sugar, brown or white
• 2 cup(s) water
• 2 cup(s) raisins
• 2 teaspoon(s) cinnamon

  • 2 ½ cup(s) flour
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 2 teaspoon(s) cocoa
  • ½ cup(s) nuts, chopped
  • 2 tablespoon(s) lard, or bacon drippings, or oleo

Simmer slowly the lard, sugar, water, raisins, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt in a medium sauce pan until raisins are plump, about 1/2 hour. Let cool. Preheat oven to 350.
