  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • ¾ cup (3 ounces) shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese, divided
  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/8 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 vidalia or other sweet onion, cut into 1/4-inch slices
  • 8 cups cubed French bread (about 8 ounces)
  • + 2 more ingredients
    • 2 cups 2% reduced-fat milk
    • Cooking spray
