Onion, Cheese, and Bacon Tart

Ingredients

  • ½ cup coarsely grated Gruyère cheese
  • 3 thick-cut bacon slices
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 large egg yolk
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • + 8 more ingredients
    • 2 tablespoons solid vegetable shortening
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 cup unbleached all purpose flour
    • 1 large onion
    • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter
    • 1 sugar
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • 2 tablespoons water

Blend flour and salt in processor. Add butter and shortening; using on/off turns, cut in until mixture resembles coarse meal.
