  • 6 small Rome apples (about 1 3/4 lb.)
  • 1 ½ cups sugar
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 ¼ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • ½ cup chopped pecans, toasted
  • + 6 more ingredients
    • 2/3 cup shortening
    • ¼ cup butter, cut into 6 equal pieces
    • ½ teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg, divided
    • ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon, divided
    • ½ cup milk

1. Preheat oven to 375°. Combine 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/4 tsp. cinnamon, and 1/4 tsp. nutmeg in a saucepan. Stir in 1 1/2 cups water; bring to a boil.
