Star Anise-Poached Pears


  • ½ cup sugar
  • 22 tablespoons water
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • ½ vanilla bean
  • 3 whole star anise
  • 4 medium-size firm but ripe Anjou or Bosc pears
